A family tradition

Growing up my grandfather would take us to downtown Atlanta to see Santa at Rich's department store and to ride the Pink Pig around the Christmas tree. This ride was on top of the department store outside and the line was always so long. I have so many good memories of these trips, memories of riding with my uncle and Mom. Memories of picking out my yearly ornament. My mom rode it while pregnant with me - it has been running since 1954.

My neices had never been so we ventured downtown. I was surprised to discover the Pink Pig is now housed in a tent in the parking lot and the cars are open air and ride on a track. It orginally had overhead rails and resembled a caged capsule you were forced to squeeze into. They did have one of the cars from the old days - it was tiny. To top it off, there was no Christmas tree but this weird storyland you rode through. Times do change and perhaps in my kid mind it was more fabulous than it really was, but that might be our only trip to the Pink Pig. We will have to search for a closer tradition.

PS - the Pig is still named Priscilla, but alas she too looks modernized. And yes, she does have a brother Percival - he was no where to be found.

Look what a happy face Tessa has. Maybe you will have to suck it up like your parents and grandparents did! ;) Huh?
